1973 Chevy Monte Carlo: Behind the Scenes - Deconstructing the Install
br>
-
This car was basically brought to us for 2 reasons. a) Make it sound the way it should, and b) fix all the rattles everywhere.
-
Wow, the story that goes with this ride... Let us first say that the initial install was not done by us. In this pic, we had just finished installing the Dynamat Xtreme on the trunk lid. The subwoofer enclosure houses (3) 12" Rockford Fosgate subs and is ported up through the rear deck.
-
The vehicle was brought to us after another shop (will remain nameless) just couldn't get it to sound the way it should. Here you see a common mistake made by backyard installers. That large gap (roughly about 4"s) between the metal and the back of the enclosure is allowing the front sound wave of the subs to cancel out the rear sound wave that is traveling up through the port in the in the rear deck.
-
So the first thing we did was completely seal off the cabin of the car from the trunk, so that only the sound through the port would be inside the cabin. 2nd problem was that the port was way off in terms of size and tuning frequency. As the enclosure has several angles to it, trying to calculate the air space within it was next to impossible without removing the box. So we did some trial and error with 3 new ports, until we got it to sound the way it should.
-
Next was the rear deck. With the vehicle being so old and so many people removing the rear deck, it was broken in several places. This is what is looked like once the factory upholstery was removed. Now it was up to us to put Humpty-Dumpty back together again...
-
We basically reconstructed the entire think out of fiberglass.
-
Then we wrapped it in black carpet to match the interior. The large rectangular "hole" that you see is actually a metal mesh screen that covers the port opening in the rear deck.
-
Here is a closer look at the mesh screen. There were a few other little things that we did to this vehicle, but not enough pics or space to talk about them all.
